Did you already know the new Apple M2 processor that equips the new MacBook?

Last Monday, during the annual conference, the Apples Unveiled the successor to its M1 processor, which they call Apple M2. This new chip is built on a 5nm process and comes with 18% higher CPU performance and 35% GPU performance than the M1. The neural engine is 40% faster. It also brings up 50% more memory bandwidth than the M1 and supports unified memory up to 24GB.

Commenting on the Apple M2, which will now power the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, Johnny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technology, said:

“The M2 launched the second generation of M-Series chips and goes beyond the notable features of the M1. With our tireless focus on energy-efficient performance, the M2 offers a faster CPU, GPU and neural engine. And with new features like increased memory bandwidth and ProRes acceleration, the Apple M2 continues to accelerate Apple’s Silicon innovation for the Mac.

Going to the extreme, Apple said the M2 chip, which uses second-generation 5nm technology, includes 20 billion transistors, 25% more than its predecessor. These additional transistors allow the chip to handle more complex workloads, meaning users should see improvements when considering process-intensive tasks.

The release of the new Apple product will not be complete without attacking the competition. According to the company, the M2 delivers almost double the same power level as the latest 10-core chip found in Windows laptops. Compared to the 12-core chip found in PCs, the M2 delivers almost 90% peak performance with only a quarter of power consumption.

In addition to improving performance, the Apple M2 unlocks state-of-the-art technology in Apple computers. The company highlights the following:

  • Neural engines can process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second – more than 40% of the M1.
  • The multimedia engine includes a high bandwidth video decoder, which supports 8K H.264 and HEVC video.
  • Apple’s powerful ProRes video engine enables playback of multiple 4K and 8K video streams.
  • Apple’s latest secure enclave provides the highest level of security.
  • The new Image Signal Processor (ISP) provides better image noise reduction.

In addition to the energy consumption cuts offered by the Apple M2, the company says that every chip it builds, from design to build, will be 100% carbon neutral. This will help the company fulfill its commitment to protect the planet.
