The “future” classroom may be closer than you think. With the advancement of augmented reality technology and the small impact of the epidemic on distance learning, universities and schools in Brazil and around the world have begun exploring metaverse resources. Sold as the next “revolution” for the Internet, Virtual Reality Space was created in 1980 and, in it, it is possible to buy land, hold meetings, concerts, play football and watch classes with controlled avatars for you. .

While not a groundbreaking contribution to the genre, Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, is back on the Metavers radar after renaming the holding company Meta, saying it would be his next bet. This mix of the Matrix universe with the characters in The Sims game now reaches Brazilian education.

The FIA Business School last week launched the first classroom of its kind, which began running courses in Metavers. While teachers use virtual reality glasses to teach, students who do not yet have the device can join the online space via video call.

“It simply came to our notice then. We are not talking about a ‘higher’ world, we are talking about a different world. The student can participate from home, lying on the bed, taking to class. There, he walks, talks, claps and communicates with his colleagues as I write on the blackboard, give a presentation and ask questions, ”explains Alessandra Montini, director of the Labdata nucleus at the FIA responsible for creating space.

She says she spent ten days immersing with her colleagues to create this virtual classroom. It only took three to four hours for the remote to hang.

Despite the visual and interactive attractions, Alessandra shows that this is one of the main challenges for Metavers teachers. “It’s amazing for the student, because he sits and watches. For the teacher, he needs to know the subject wholeheartedly, follow the avatar expressions to see if the student understands, control the available technical resources शिक Teaching classes in metavers is like a marathon. You have to wait 15 minutes and then take a break, ”he says.

Companies and universities in China, the USA, Mexico, and parts of Europe have only invested in training and courses that are taught in virtual reality. Among the benefits, they highlight the possibility of gaining students and staff from around the world.

Last month, the USP also entered the game and became the first Brazilian public university in Metaverso, through an international cooperation agreement with Radio Kaka (RACA), to provide the institution with the first NFT (non-fungible token). The purpose is to promote applications in the virtual reality world and research on technical, financial and legal aspects.

This NFT means that the USP has acquired a “rare piece of Earth” in its own metaverse developed by the United States of Mars (USM), an online “nation” created by RACA. In practice, Brazilian organizations can use this “virtual land” to create space for interaction. But, before that, it is necessary to find qualified staff and the money required to build the modules. “Right now, our goal is to attract people and ideas to create space and interiors,” explains Marcos Simplicio, associate professor of computer engineering at the Polytechnic School of USP.

“This is an expanding market, and not just for those from the technology sector,” said Juliana Tenorio, manager of educational solutions at the Brazilian Institute of Capital Markets (Ibmec).

She says the search for jobs in this corner has grown in the market and on LinkedIn. In partnership with the magazine Examination, Ibmec launched a master’s course in Digital Manager and Metaverso this year, which lasts one year, costs just over R $ 18,000, is done entirely online and is the equivalent of a postgraduate course approved by the Ministry of Education. Information about this is from the newspaper. State of So Paulo.
